The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and every November the Athens Marathon ends on its track. You can visit, walk the track and climb the marble tiers; at sunset it glows.

The Zappeion is a grand 19th-century hall set in gardens, next to the National Garden: a shady green park in the heart of the city, with paths, ponds and old trees. Walk through it to Syntagma Square and the Parliament.

Once the largest temple in Greece; fifteen of its giant Corinthian columns still stand. Hadrian’s Arch, the old gate between the ancient and the Roman city, is right next to it.

The modern museum at the foot of the Acropolis, with the finds of the Sacred Rock and a glass top floor facing the Parthenon. The walk up to the Acropolis starts around the corner.
